Saraswati is known as the goddess of speech, arts, music and knowledge. Her Sanskrit name translates as something like "essence of being" (saara, essence; swa, being), and this is believed to be the quality of this Hindu goddess. She is known as "the goddess of wisdom," "patroness of science," "mother of the Vedas," "inventor of letters," "goddess of music," "inspirer of poetry" and "advocate of the arts." It is said that it was she who gave language to human beings. The Sanskrit of ancient Aryan culture was attributed to this deity. She is known as vac, meaning "word". Saraswati personifies the ultimate principle of sound (sábda), which is made manifest from the ethereal world to the plane perceptible by human beings through speech, mantras and music. 

It is said that the god Brahma, the god of creation, gave life to Saraswati from his own tongue. Her beauty and charm full of divine grace, mystical creativity and intelligence captivated him to the point of choosing her as his goddess consort, although in other versions, she is said to be the daughter of Durga, the mother goddess, and Vishnu, the supreme god who preserves creation.
